I have retired for more than 1 year now. Without work assignments, I have stopped using computer applications like excel workheets and PowerPoint. Computer technology has advanced a lot over the last few years such as AI, and chatGPT. I feel very much out of touch, even using social media tools like Instagram and facebook becoming a challenge sometimes. Is anyone sharing my frustration?

Yes, if you do not keep up with the latest developments, you will be left behind for sure. It is never too late to ” learn or re-learn” things.

Watch youtube videos, a good source for practical knowledge; you may find what you need to learn from basic to relatively more advanced applications. And most importantly, they are free and you can repeat watching them

The world also talks a lot about ChatGPT. Any experience to share here?

ChatGPT is very powerful. You can literally churn out a thank you letter to a long essay within minutes; obviously, you need to edit the content to make it more personal; a super-productive tool. I love it

But I understand you can’t use ChatGPT in Hong Kong unless you have a VPN.

I am afraid the tool will replace a lot of human jobs. For example: legal advice and agrement can be given by GPT at the touch of a button

This means that university graduates will not go for traditional jobs like accountancy or legal assistants. Managing or operating AI tools will become a new skill that one must possess in the more and more digitalized world

My takeaway is that we retirees need to learn these AI tools as well; I understand they are quite user-friendly

yes, agree. We do not need to understand how a computer is programmed with the essential coding logic before we can learn how to use it. Same concept!!!

True true. Must embrace AI and ChatGPT even if we are not in the job market. I am sure we can find it useful somehow in our lives after retirement
